From now on, we will regularly invite "living books" from all walks of life into our school to communicate with students face to face. The series of event aims to cultivate a pool of outstanding students who are ready to perform on the international stage, and are "adept at foreign languages, balanced in liberal arts and science, with all-round development, creativity, versatility and high quality".

The first living book activity
In the first session, we were honored to invite Hao Zhou as the distinguished guest of Living Library, who is with IDSSE. He shared his insights over his ordinary life with the students.
曾获“全国五一奖章”、“全国技术能手”、“首届全国百名最美青工”、“全国青年岗位能手”等荣誉称号。
2017年光荣出席了中国共产党第十九次全国代表大会，成为为数不多的80后年轻党代表。
在三次马里亚纳远洋科考航次中先后解决各项海试科研装备的技术难题168项，合理升级改造66项，使国产自主研发的科研装备取得多项国际、国内第一。先后有技术革新成果125项。
Mr Zhou first introduced his work at IDSSE, which is to investigate and research deep-sea biology, minerals and seawater samples at depths of more than 6,000 meters. Afterwards, he shared his scientific exploration of Mariana trench, during which he and his team had to tolerate the many-hour journey, high-intensity work, 2-3 hours’ daily sleep and seasickness. However, they succeeded in their mission by overcoming the twists and turns in the end.
Under such circumstances, no one could stick it out without a firm belief. The work of IDSSE is carried out with a great deal of national technology support, financial investment and high expectations from the motherland and the people. Inspiration from this trustworthy responsibility and belief ushers in selfless devotion of scientific teams and encourages them to fulfill their task perfectly despite the harsh conditions.
He also recalled an unforgettable experience. In a scientific expedition, waves more than eight meters high suddenly broke the ligature installed on the Ocean Bottom Seismograph. Instantly, many devices were damaged or lost. Without professional maintenance devices, the team managed to make replacements for the lost or damaged parts by working overtime by hand, so as to keep up scientific progress.
Mr Zhou sets us a good example: no matter how hard life or conditions are, we shall treat tasks with the utmost of effort. What he has delivered is the most simple and precious craftsmanship spirit, the unremitting pursuit of everyone.

Q: Hello Mr Zhou, the Marian Trench is very deep. Do you know how long it will take to probe into those more meaningful and worthwhile findings？And what will be the extent of the results?
A: As early as 2016, we had broken the record of 10,000 meters in the scientific research over the Marian Trench. At present, we use unmanned equipment programmed beforehand and then set them out to sample microorganisms and sediments below 10,000 meters. Though currently at developmental stage, Endeavour, a manned deep-sea submersible, will soon send our scientists to sample selectively through glass at the Marian Trench. The unmanned device cannot clearly detect the sea bottom, and is very likely to collect useless samples. Your dream will come true in the near future.
Q: Hello Mr Zhou, how did you deal with waste during the scientific journey?
A: We need to protect our environment while disposing garbage. Our job is to carry out ocean research without pollution. We arranged a garbage room, set with an hydraulic device, to compress the garbage into little cubes. A garbage ship will recycle them in a harmless disposal manner ultimately.
In the future, we hope our students to walk toward the light with the craftsmanship spirit and wisdom of this "living book".
